Your Beauty New Year’s Resolution:
Break Those Bad Beauty Habits
Beauty & Life on a Budget, by Rachel Harris
Every January, most of us embark on financial and fitness resolutions, as we close our wallets and open up a box of a brand new pair of running shoes. How about striving to break your bad beauty habits, too? Do you bite your nails or try day after day to properly function on only six hours of sleep? If you neglect your posture and forget your sunscreen, you may want to make 2008 a year of change. Breaking bad beauty habits often leads to an overall healthier you so check out my column below for some quick tips on how to bring your beauty routine up to the level that will enable you to look and feel your best which should be a New Years resolution that we all should strive for.
BAD BEAUTY HABIT: NAIL BITING/PEELING |

 |
I once had a nail tech tell me that our nails are jewels, not tools! If you misuse your nails, have a nail biting habit or, like me, peel your nails away, I have found a product that women swear by. It is called Rejuvacote by duri and the product promises to heal split, cracked and even acrylic eaten nails. So if you have worn fake nails for years and are afraid that your natural nails are a casualty that will never see the light of day again, try Rejuvacote.
I spoke to local Nail Technician Kathy Weishan and met several of her clients who proudly showed me their healed nails. Kathy told me that Rejuvacote will fix weak nails in a matter of weeks. I spoke to several women who tried this product. Some were biters, one had removed her acrylic nails to find badly damaged nail beds and one was trying to heal nails that were weak from excessive peeling. They all gave it a thumbs up and all of them had healthy and strong nails. |
Kathy recommends that the product be combined with weekly hot oil manicures and a second product called duri Herbatherapy a blend that actually contains a real herb stem in the bottle. You can see it in the picture above.
This product contains a blend of natural extracts and oils that consistently release nutrients & vitamins in the oil to soften cuticles and nourish and moisturize the nail plate. For more on these products and hot oil manicures, call Kathy Weisman at Just For You Salon & Spa in Tempe at 602-531-9335. |
BAD BEAUTY HABIT: NO SUNSCREEN |
|
You go from the car to the office, so you don’t need sunscreen since you will be indoors all day, right? Wrong — you do — especially on your face, which is exposed to the elements all day long. Proper use of sunscreen may not only reduce the chance of skin cancer, but also of premature aging.
DDF has a line of sunscreens that protect, restore moisture and feed the face with an antioxidant complex. DDF or Doctors Dermatologic Formula is a line that was created by Dermatologist Dr. Howard Sobel and his sister, nutritionist Elaine Linker. The products not only protect, but also correct existing damage and resolve future concerns.
|
DDF Matte Finish Photo-Age Protection SPF 30 is oil and fragrance free, offers UVA-UVB protection and packs in a super complex that includes 11 antioxidants for complete free radical protection. DDF also offers the Enhancing Sun Protection SFP 30 that protects, evens out skin tone and minimizes visible redness. Soothing ingredients such as green tea, aloe Vera gel and chamomile extract makes not putting on sunscreen an easy bad beauty habit to break. Get DDF products at www.sephora.com.

BAD BEAUTY HABIT: NOT ENOUGH SLEEP |
|
Lights Out, Sleep, Sugar and Survival by T. S. Wiley and Bent Formby - $10.17 at amazon.com
This is my big one. I’m notorious for burning the midnight oil as I try to get it all done. Sooner or later in the week, my lack of sleep catches up with me and it shows under my eyes, in my voice and in my performance.
I thought that striving for 7 to 8 hours would be a good goal. But recent studies suggest that we actually need nine hours of sleep to get the rest our bodies crave.
|
A recent article on AOL.com reported that the National Sleep Foundation (NSF) says that more than two-thirds of older adults suffer from sleep problems. The report also says that not getting enough slumber can result in psychiatric problems and can affect memory, learning, and logical reasoning.
So, get yourself a copy of a great book called Lights Out, Sleep, Sugar and Survival (pictured)by T. S. Wiley and Bent Formby and educate yourself on the benefits of sleep. Wiley’s book sheds some light on the importance of turning the lights out and sleeping nine hours or more for successful weight loss, fighting depression and more. Adopt a nightly routine like you do with a child that includes items that make you sleepy such as a warm bath, a non-caffeinated herbal tea and a good book. Follow the mantra to not dine after nine, instead get to bed and you will start to see a more beautiful you. |
BAD BEAUTY HABIT: STOP SLUMPING |

|
The Yoga Deck: 50 Poses & Meditations for Body, Mind, & Spirit by Olivia Miller – $14.50 at amazon.com
I had a friend recently tell me to stop wearing my shoulders as earrings! That was an eye-opening comment! Bad posture is unattractive and it can result in back pain, headaches, muscle fatigue and strain. High heels and hours on the computer can also contribute to poor posture.
|
Standing and sitting up straight are habits that we have to really focus on every day, before it begins to happen naturally. I have found exercising with a personal trainer or even a friend who can watch your form a great way to stop the slouch. Yoga is another activity that helps undo the bent-over back or slumped shoulders.
If gym fees or yoga classes don’t fit into your schedule or budget, try these very helpful yoga cards called The Yoga Deck: 50 Poses & Meditations for Body, Mind, & Spirit by Olivia Miller. These portable cards are easy to grab on the run and pack with you and the exercises can even be done at your desk at work. The deck is packed with cool poses, meditation cards and posture samples and even advice on how to breathe properly. Taking time to breathe goes hand in hand with good posture. |
