Beauty Remedies for Winter’s Woes
Beauty & Life on a Budget, by Rachel Harris

At last winter has arrived! We can finally wear our boots that we missed all year with that cute chunky knit. However the cold and dry weather also brings beauty woes like flyaway hair, dry itchy skin and cracked heels. Help is here. I consulted a few experts. They told me what they keep in their beauty arsenal to battle brittle skin and more. Read on and add these items to your winter beauty tool kit to have healed heels, smooth tame hair and much more. I’ve even included my favorite Food on Your Face Recipe for an all natural at-home mask.  Try it; your face will love it!

Winter Woe: Static Hair

Winter Remedy:
Kiehl’s Stylist Series Crème with Silk Groom $18.99 at Walgreens or www.walgreens.com

Make-up artist Karen Hall and her husband photographer John Hall, swear by Kiehl’s Stylish Series Crème with Silk Groom. Once the weather turned windy, my hair turned frizzy with enough static electricity to light a match! Each time I climbed into my car, the back of the seat rubbed my hair and sent it flying high the rest of the day. It really annoyed me and ruined the hair style that I spent time trying to create that morning! I tried Karen’s suggestion and it works! You simply rub a dab of the crème through your mane and presto, the static is gone plus the product gives your hair a nice shine, too.

Winter Woe:
Keeping Hands Germ-Free in Cold & Flu Season

Winter Remedy: Start with the right soap - Next To Godliness Soap $4.50 at nexttogodliness.com or Trader Joe’s

Tis' the season for excessive hand washing to fight against the cold and flu. Use a good pure soap like Next To Godliness sold at Trader’s Joes.

This is an all-natural soap with no added harsh chemicals. The company website says that they use glycerin soap that cleanses without stripping or upsetting the delicate natural pH balance necessary for soft, healthy skin. Since the soap has no heavy animal oils, it rinses clean and leaves no sudsy film behind.

My mother swears by this product, and especially likes the fact that this soap contains no anti-bacterial ingredients like so many sold on the market today. Recent studies suggest that the anti-bacterial products may kill the bad bacteria, but also rid the body of the good bacteria that is needed to fight infections.

Winter Woe:  Scratchy, Itchy Eczema

Winter Remedy: Aveeno Eczema Lotion & Aveeno Baby Oatmeal Bath

Borrow from the baby aisle for help with this problem. When my daughter was an infant, my pediatrician told me that she was suffering from Eczema, a skin condition that causes red irritated itchy dry patches.

Sudden changes in temperature can cause this condition to flare up. I have noticed in the dry winter that her skin will actually bleed from her excessive scratching. I also develop a little Eczema on my face around my nose and chin when I venture out into a chilly wind.

From birth, Alexis’ doctor recommended Aveeno products, which I prefer over the steroid solutions. The Aveeno baby lotion has been helpful for my daughter and for my face. The company just introduced a new product called Aveeno Eczema Care and this stuff really works. It is steroid-free and the product was awarded the National Eczema Association Seal of Acceptance. For bad all over Eczema attacks, try Aveeno’s Baby Oatmeal bath for soothing relief.

Winter Woe:   Dry, cracked heels

Winter Remedy: Borrow from your kitchen some good ol’ olive oil

I just love olive oil because it is good on your salad, a good substitution for butter on your bread and you can treat your feet with it, too! Before bedtime, simply rub some olive oil all over your feet (or use an olive oil spray can and spray away) put on your socks and sleep while your feet enjoy nature’s pedicure. I tried it and the next morning my heels looked great in my sling-back heels. Plus my husband stopped telling me that my feet felt like sandpaper under the covers!

Winter Woe:  Dull, dry and tired skin

Winter Remedy: Food on your face with a blended facial

A recent issue of Fitness magazine shared a recipe for a smoothie facial that works to moisturize and refresh your face. I made a date with my blender, whipped it up, put food on my face and it worked!

Try this food facial mask: Combine one banana with one cup plain yogurt, two tablespoons oatmeal and 1 tablespoon of honey in a blender. Blend for about one minute.

Apply to your face using Perfection brand Cosmetic Wedges with Vitamin E. Leave on for 15 minutes and then wash off with water.

Your skin will feel smooth and nourished!
