A Modern 'Twist' on Some Old Updo's
From Kendall & Beate, Mane Attraction

The inspiration for these styles is from the film Hairspray. The hair in the movie is FUN but not particularly wearable…at least not in 2007. So, we decided to give a new ‘twist’ to some old do’s.
Our stylist Monica created modern pigtails ala Amanda Bynes on Liz. She started by setting the hair with a large barreled curling iron, and then loosely gathered the hair to the sides. To give a more contemporary feel, instead of backcombing the crown for volume, Monica pinned the bangs and created the height in the front. |
For the modern adaptation of Brittany Snow’s updo, Monica pinned Alissa’s shoulder length hair up and away in a simple French Twist. She randomly pulled out pieces of hair to give a tousled, modern look. Bumble and bumble Styling Balm was used on the side swept bangs to give a more ‘lived-in look’.
Our Makeup Artist Joanna, used heavy eye liner and mascara on the upper as well as the lower lashes to evoke 60’s icon Twiggy. The rosy cheeks and matte finish gives a clean, fresh and wholesome look. And using a subtle, light lip gloss helps bring emphasis to the eyes. |

The key to keeping the look fresh and not retro is to leave the hair loose. In 1962, hair was very stiff and overly-finished. If there is such a thing as hair being too perfect, that was it. 2007 hair is natural and relaxed. Fashion, whether it be hair, clothes, or accessories is cyclical. There is always a muse from the past. So be inspired but don’t replicate the exact styles. Mix, match and most of all have FUN!
