Heidi's Summer Photo Contest

Heidi recently conducted a summer photo contest where she chose three finalist’s photos and created a page layout for them. Over the next three weeks we will show you what she did for each layout and how she did it.

Finalist One: Seaside

When I saw these photos...they had such an inspiring feeling...surreal. I loved the softness, and innocence and purity. I knew that the page had to have a down-played vintage softness. Something warm, with a touch of patriotism...the brightness and intensity of the blue water and red of the dress could not compete with anything on the page, but instead fit in perfectly.

  1. I started out by painting a piece of Bazzil textured card-stock, the canvas kind.
  1. I painted it completely with rough brush strokes using just a foam brush.
  1. Once it was dry, I sanded the edges really good and took off some of the paint to give just a little red reveal.
  1. I then painted the large clipboard “C” and the chipboard stars red, and then white, allowing for proper dry time between.
  1. I used a wide red dot of tape (from the “red café sku)...ran one piece all the way across the page and then a shorter piece layered over that a bit to only set off the two photos that would be positioned there.
  1. I added a 1/8” red stripe tape along the bottom of the dot to further define that border.
  1. I then sanded over the top to make it look really muted and dull...I thought it needed a little blue, so that tiny piece of blue wave tape was the perfect addition.
  1. I positioned the photos as desired, and needed something to highlight the bottom right photo. I chose to use the ghost frame with blue paint along the edges...so it would draw the eye to that photo, but not distract.
  1. I added a little ribbon and tape to further embellish the frame. I attached the ghost frame by sewing machine. I love having thread that matches whatever I’m doing! I love a little stitching here and there!
  1. Next, I sanded all the stars and the “C” and adhered them in place...I used them to cross-balance my page.
  1. I decided to use key words and phrases for the journaling. I used the Provo craft alphabet roller stamp...I like the imperfection of the results. I combined the stamping with some hand lettering as well.

I must say, I love how this turned out...it’s going to be hard to give it back to Paige, our finalist!
