Potpourri Heart

A Sew-Expressive Project from Mulqueen Sewing Centers

http://www.janome.com/images/projects/project_0008_01.jpg

A perfect gift for Mother’s Day and June wedding showers, or dress up your own closets for spring cleaning. The unique "woven" effect on the heart makes it look beautifully intricate, but with your serger it's really a snap to make.

Materials:

  • Fiberfill - small amount
  • Potpourri of your choice
  • 3-1/4" x 10" strip netting
  • 3/4" x 6" velcro

Light Fabric:

  • 1" x 22"

Dark Fabric:

  • 1" x 22" - 1 piece
  • 1-1/2" x 45" - 1 piece
  • (B) 1-1/4" x 1-1/4" - 1 pc.
  • (A) 2-3/4" x 4-1/4" - 2 pcs.
  • 7" x 8" - 1 piece

Instructions:

  1. With right sides together, place the 1-1/4" x 1-1/4" (B) square piece on the 1" x 22" light strip. Trim off excess light strip. Serge, guiding edges along edge of knife without cutting away any fabric. Press open.
  2. With right sides together, place pieced section from Step 1 on the light strip. Trim excess light strip. http://www.janome.com/images/project-0008-fig1.gifSerge as above. Press open. NOTE: After each 2 matching color strips are serged on, press and check for squareness. Trim carefully, if necessary.
  3. Using the 1" x 22" dark strip, serge on 2 more color strips as above.
  4. Continue alternating & adding color strips for 4 more rows - 3 light colored rows and 3 dark colored rows in addition to the beginning square. Refer to Figure 1.
  5. Serge "A" piece to top of pieced square. Serge second "A" piece to side of pieced square. Refer to Figure 2. http://www.janome.com/images/project-0008-fig2.gif
  6. Cut the 7" x 8" piece into 2 - 7" x 4" pieces. Serge across both cut edges; then press to wrong sides. Cut the 6" piece of velcro in half lengthwise. Using a regular sewing machine, sew one piece of velcro to wrong side of one hemmed piece. Sew other piece of velcro to right side of remaining hemmed piece. Close the 2 pieces together with the velcro. This is the back of your heart.
  7. Chain a 45" serger chain. Lay this chain on the right side, center, of the 1-1/2" x 45" strip. Having right sides together, with serger chain enclosed in the center, serge entire strip (for handle & bows). Use the serger chain to turn the strip right side out. Cut off a 12" piece for the handle.
  8. With right sides together, lay pieced section on top of back section. Make sure top of closing is facing bottom of heart. It helps to pin these sections together. Before pinning together, lay handle in between the sections, having ends at top of each side of the heart. Refer to the photo for placement. Make sure handle is free of all outside seams. Starting at bottom tip of heart, serge around heart. At heart center, clip and pull into a straight line to serge this area.
  9. Turn right side out through velcro opening. Stuff heart top and bottom, leaving center free to insert potpourri bag. OPTIONAL: You can stuff heart completely with potpourri if you like.
  10. Potpourri Bag: Fold the 3-1/4" x 10" piece netting in half to 3-1/4" x 5". Serge both side seams. Fill with potpourri. Tie shut and insert into heart.

Add bows to each handle or heart center.
