ABC Baby Block Pillow Cubes

A Sew-Expressive Project from Mulqueen Sewing Centers
 ABC Baby Block Pillow Cubes

These soft blocks are made with traditional redwork embroidery. Make a set using all the letters for your favorite little tyke and watch them learn the alphabet while they play.

Sewing Equipment & Supplies Required:

  • Embroidery sewing machine
  • Redwork Embroidery Design Card
  • Embroidery Hoop
  • Embroidery thread
  • Bobbin thread
  • 75/11 needle

Fabric & Notions Required:

  • 1/2 yd. white fleece (makes four blocks)
  • Adhesive back stabilizer
  • Polyester stuffing
  • All purpose thread
  • Pinking shears or pinking blade rotary cutter

Instructions:

Cut six 6" x 6" squares from the fleece for one block.

Mark the center of each square.

Place the stabilizer in the Embroidery Hoop.

Adhere one of the fleece squares to the stabilizer.

Set up your machine for Embroidery mode and transfer embroidery designs.

Select a design of choice.

Embroider the square using thread color of choice.

Repeat with remaining squares.

Trim square to 5" x 5" centering the design using a pinking shear or pinking blade rotary cutter.

Set up your sewing machine for ordinary sewing.

Pin two squares together along one side, wrong sides together.

Sew using a 3/8" seam. Start and stop 3/8" from the end.

Continue to join all four sides following above method.

For the top and bottom, pin the square on opposite sides, wrong sides together.

Sew each seam following the above method.

Pin the other two sides and sew the top on, again using the same method.

Fill the block with polyester stuffing.

Sew the bottom square to the block.

Create these letter blocks to use around your home. Here are some of our suggestions:

  • Spell "Welcome" in the front hall on the stairs.
  • Spell "Home Sweet Home" on a fireplace mantel.
  • Spell a child's name.

Zig-zag folded 12" lengths of ribbon to the corners of the blocks. Tie them together and place on bookshelves in the child's room.
