Each week, Jill is helping us add a new wine word to our vocabulary and a new wine to our collection. Here are this weeks top picks.
Word of the Week
Terroir ~ A French term that describes the sum of the effects of the environment on the vineyard. Rainfall, wind velocity, frequency of fog, sun, soil, slope etc. There is now single english word to match Terrior but simply put: "the coming together of climate, soil and landscape" ~ Jed Steele, Winemaker

Sarah in Phoenix is curious about organic wines.
Dear Jill,
I know many people including myself feel the awful affects of a hangover after just 2 glasses of wine. Is it true that if you drink organic wine you will be less likely to have a hangover?
Dear Sarah,
Very good question! And thank you for not blaming sulfites. The short answer is: Yes definitely try Organic wines if you are having headaches with wines. For the long answer read on.
First, I'll say just one thing for the benefit of everyone reading. There are lots of misconceptions of headaches and wine. One could simply be a hangover, or lack of hydration before drinking the wine. You have to remember a glass of wine, on average has more alcohol than beer or a mixed drink. So two glasses of wine can be more than you think.
Secondly, I'll explain a little about organic wines. Certified Organic wines come from certified organic vineyards. It's not easy to be certified and I truly wish the wineries that are certified would identify themselves on their labels and be a little more proud. Organic vineyards do not use any type of chemicals or fertilizers. This includes cleansing the soils of their vineyards before planting to produce fully organic grapes. These chemicals are what can trigger headaches or allergic reactions in some people. Rightfully so, since your body doesn't want the chemicals and you can feel that through the headaches, and some people with hives.
Here's a way to tell what is bothering you in the wine. Keep a journal when you drink wine. Note if you have any reactions right away or even the next day make a note of the following:
Grape Varietal
Region it was grown in
Winery Name
With this information you will be able to decipher if you are sensitive to the grape itself, the region it was grown in, or the way the wine was made. Take a look back and evaluate to see if any patterns emerge!
