Top Wines from Women's Expo
From WineStyle's Jill Stacey
Thank you to all you mysweetconnection.com members that came out to the Women’s Expo. What a great weekend it was. We had a tremendous response from all of you in the Wine Chateau! So many of you came and relaxed and watched the craziness below. Positive comments are still coming in!
I thought we would feature the top four wines that were sampled at the expo. Of course the biggest winner was the New Age White Wine – Steve Krepps from Quesisential Wine Group was on hand to make you the coolest “wine coolers”! Thank you Steve! I am sure tons will be sipped around the pool this hot summer. For those of you that couldn’t make it, we have the simple recipe below…and of course where can you get New Age? Why at WineStyles of Course!
New Age White Table Wine from Argentina – Sauvignon Blanc and Malvasia Blended to make a refreshingly crisp, thirst quenching good citrus wine, with a slight effervescence. Pour over ice and squeeze a lime in for a summer cocktail! Low alcohol content makes this a great sipping wine.
Pezzi King Old Vine Zinfandel – Dry Creek Valley, California. One of the smoothest zinfandels I have had in years. Full of rich plum, black cherry flavors that fill your palate with a mid mouth oak background that compliments the small pepper finish. The tannins are silky yet firm. The finish is long and lingering and leaving craving more. The alcohol is on the high side at 16.4% so be careful with your cravings!
Wilson Creek Almond Champagne – Temecula, California. What a treat! Bubbly and fresh with almond influences, because they actually soak crushed almonds in the wine as it ferments so you get this lovely almond extract flavor. For those of you that don’t like French Champagne but what to celebrate with some bubbly, this is the wine for you!
PGA Cellars Commissioners Private Reserve Cabernet Sauvignon – Dry Creek Valley, California. Notice we have 2 wines from this area, Dry Creek is North of Napa and is really making a name for it’s self with some very delicious wines coming out of the area. This Cab is a big one! The vintage is 03 and is fully of firm tannin structure but surrounded by delicious stewed pitted fruit flavors such as plum and cherry. At first opening, the fruit is very tight. So you might want to decant the wine for 1 hour or so to open up the fruit and allow the oxygen to bring the flavors out of their hiding! And don’t be afraid to lay this wine down to age for 5-10 years.
Tight is our word for the week. We all know what tight pants are right. Well it’s sort of the same idea. The wine is locked up in the bottle with little oxygen and it can’t breathe. Once it is opened and you allow the surface of the wine, or you swirl your glass or decanter, then the wine begins to open up and allow the fruit to really be tasted. The sharpness that you might first taste when you open the bottle is the fruit “tight” and unexposed to your taste buds. But if you let the air really get in there the flavors begin to open and soften and it will be much more enjoyable. So here is some homework: Open a bottle of red wine: Cabernet, Shiraz, Merlot – it doesn’t matter. Pour some in a glass and take a few sips. Make notes and then leave a ½-full glass on the counter….swirl it for awhile. Let it sit and let the oxygen do its work. Taste the wine every ½ hour and make notes. You will see an amazing transformation in the flavors that tantalize you palate!

Cheers Everyone!
