A dent in your wine bottle may sound bad, but it’s actually good.
by Jill Stacey
What's the dent for?
The "dent" is termed as a punt. The punt is the concave bottom of a 'better' wine. The origin of the punt has been long lost in history. They likely existed to strengthen the bottom of the bottle and also provide a stable bottom in hand-blown glass bottles.
Now the punt exists for two reasons:
- Consumers equate the punt with the quality of the wine.
- 99.9% of wines are all 750ml...in order to create a unique bottle the depth of the punt can help make sure the bottle is still 750ml.
Cheers!
