Wine Word of the Week: Corked
From WineStyles Wine Taster Jill Stacey
Each week, Jill is helping us add a new wine word to our vocabulary. This week's word is Corked.
Corked wine has an unpleasant mildewed, rotten egg, dirty sock taste/smell. Many times it’s caused by bacteria that was not properly cleaned out of the cork. When the wine is placed on its side so the wine touches the cork, it causes a chemical change in the wine. This is why at restaurants they will pour a small amount for the person ordering the wine to smell and try so you make sure the wine is good. I recommend that everyone do this at home also. If you feel the wine smells rotten, re-cork and take the bottle back to the store where you bought it. Have them try it. They should replace the bottle for you, and their distributor will replace the one you returned. Life is too short to drink bad wine!!
