Crisp wines for the hot summer days
by Jill Stacey
Our “Crisp” wines refer to wines that are light bodied, refreshing, clean, bright flavors of citrus, apple, and pear.
The easiest way to think of a “crisp” wine is when you drink the wine the flavors of the wine are felt down the middle of your tongue, your mouth will slightly water and the finish is clean.
These wines can include wines that are “sweet” to the taste or can also be tart. For instance a Riesling Wine could be ripe red apple, juicy ripe peach or pear flavors — sweet and juicy. Or a Pinot Grigio, Sauvignon Blanc can be more green apple, or citrus acidity with low sugar residual. The flavors are there and the finish is light and gone, no real after taste. These wines are perfect for the summer because they are not “drying” to your mouth, they are more thirst quenching.
Crisp wines are best to pare with salads, flaky fish, shellfish, spicy dishes, and soft cheeses. Some more specific pairings would be:
Lietz Dragonstone Riesling with Thai Food, or Spicy Orange Chicken/Beef — Riesling pairs best with foods that are sweet with a spice because the wine will put the fire out and at the same time bring the sweetness of the sauces out.
Roshambo Sauvignon Blanc or Huntington Sauvignon Blanc pairs wonderfully with chicken, halibut fish, crab or shrimp with light fruity sauces
Crisp wines also pare well with salad with citrus dressing or citrus fruit within the salad, especially if topped with fish or chicken.
Twisted Oak Verdelho is a Spanish grape that pairs well with gGreen chili based Spanish/Mexican food. The light crisp wine puts the fire of the spice out while also complimenting the other ingredients in the dish.
Tieffenbruener Pinot Grigio from Italy is a crisp lightly acidic wine that pairs well with Italian food, especially things made with softer lighter cheeses.
Other grape varietals that fit in the Crisp category that most people do not think of are: Vernaccia di San Gimignano, Gavi, Vinho Verde, Albarino, Chenin Blanc.
Let me know if you have any questions or a favorite wine to share!
Cheers!
