White Wines That Are Rich In Flavor
by Jill Stacey
What kind of wine do you like? Crisp, Silky, Rich, Bubbly, Fruity, Mellow, Bold or Nectar? Don't know where to start?
Our wine taster, Jill Stacey is teaching us about each of these categories. You're bound to be an expert after this. It's wine made easy.
At WineStyles we categorize our wines by “Style” categories and then add simple adjectives to explain what the wine tastes like. Last week we talked about silky wines. This week, let’s tackle rich wines! If you only tried a “rich” Chardonnay, then more than likely you would like the other wines found in the Rich section. So you could try a Rich buttery, oaky Chardonnay from California or a Viognier or a Washington Barrel Fermented Semillion. Choices within your taste “style”!
Rich is our full bodied white wine category. This type of wine is best described as wine with flavors of caramel, tropical fruit, peach, and spice. They are typically aged in oak barrels that create a creamy mouth feel and add a wood and nutty flavor. The flavors of these wines affect all of your mouth, or what we would term “heavy on the palate.”
Some recommended wines from the Rich Style Category:

Buckeley’s Chardonnay ~ Australia - This wine is vibrant in color with the essence of pear and pink grapefruit characters that fill the bouquet (smell) and palate (taste). This is a full body wine with a balance of acidity and wood finish. It won 89pt from the Wine Enthusiast.
Twisted Oak Viognier ~ Calaveras County, California - Intense aromas of peach, apricot, jasmine and vanilla flavors that mirror the peach and jasmine aromas but also add heavy creamy and nutty characters, with subtle oak integration. 90pts from the Wine Enthusiast.
Storr’s Gwerztraminer ~ Monterey, California - Most people see the “G” wine and think all of them are sweet. However this version of the Gwerztraminer is more of a “dry” style. But don’t count it out of a wine to try. Rose petals and spice dominate the nose. The palate shows lychee nut, honeysuckle and a touch of oak with a soft creaminess, contrasted yet complemented by a firm acidity. Gold Medal winning winery from their first release.
Food pairing ideas: Turkey, Pork, & Oily fish especially with creamy sauces.
Check back next week, I’ll be talking about Bubbly wines.
Cheers!
