Try a Refreshing Lambrusco

Advice from WineStyle's Jill Stacey

Ok, I’ll go first:  Yes I drank Reunite Lambrusco  and thought : “Wow”!   I confess, I was a beginner and thought I was sophisticated.  For years I would think of Lambrusco as a faux paux in the world of wine.  Then I found Ca’ de’ Medici a true Italian Lambrusco producer that has brought this refreshing and fun wine back to life and back in our glasses.

What is Lambrusco? It is both a variety of Italian grape as well as a type of wine.  Some Lambrusco is made to be still wine (no bubbles) and Lambrusco Reggiano DOC is also used to make amabile (slightly sweet) wine through use of up to 15 percent of the Ancellotta grape.

Country of Origin:  Italy - Once named Enotria for its abundant vineyards, Italy (thanks to the ancient Greeks and Romans) has had an enormous impact on the wine world.   From the shores of Italy, the Romans brought grapes and their winemaking techniques to North Africa, Spain and Portugal, Germany, France, the Danube Valley, the Middle East and even England.   Modern Italy, which didn't actually exist as a country until the 1870s, once produced mainly simple, everyday wine. It wasn't until the 1970s that Italy began the change toward quality.   Now, some of the world’s finest wines are found in Italy.

Lambrusco is one of those wines.  Exuberant is the word to describe this wonderful wine.   A generation ago, legions of mass-produced, sweetened-for-the-U.S.-market Lambrusco flowed all over America, ruining the reputation of the DOC until now.  Today Lambrusco is enjoying an incredible rebirth.  Wine lovers have discovered the clean, fresh, dry, fruit character with a hint of bubbles.  A perfect aperitif.  And there are more than just the “purple froth”, this is also a Rose’ and a Bianco (white).  These are all very fun and very flexible wines.

Not sure what is Dry and what is Sweet? – When you look at the labels look for Secco for a dry wine and Amabile for Sweet.

Here are a few to choose from all reasonably priced at: $13 - $15 for a 750ml bottle.  All are available at WineStyles Peoria and Scottsdale.
