Is Your Style Mellow?
by Wine Taster Jill Stacey
Over the last couple of weeks Jill has taken us on a tour of wine "styles"...Crisp, Silky, Rich, Bubbly and Fruity.
This week we focus on the Mellow style.
Mellow is our medium bodied red wine category. You’ll find round, velvety, smooth wines with flavors of cherry, berries, herbs and small spice from the oak barrels. These are not “dry” or “sweet” wines. They are nice soft wines with a little weight on the palate than the fruit forward wines. “Weight on the palate” means that when you take a sip you will taste more flavors on your tongue and your cheeks will also get a little more involved in the flavors.
If you find your style is “Mellow” and you only tried a Merlot, than more than likely you would like the other wines found in the Merlot section. So you could try a Mellow Zinfandel from California, or a Sangiovese from Italy. “Fruity” light bodied red wines tend to give you flavor and the finish is quick but not lasting. Mellow wines have more flavors and a more lingering finish.
Some recommended wines from the Mellow Style are:
