Enjoy a Green Wine
Advice from WineStyle's Jill Stacey
“Green Wine” - Vinho Verde – from Portugal.
An inexpensive, fun summer wine that is cool and refreshing. This wine goes with anything from Spanish food to salads to seafood! There are light citrus flavors, lime, hints of crisp apricots and even a slight effervescence that tickles your nose.
Vinho Verde wines are from the northern most part of Portugal and are low in alcohol, low in sugar and meant to drink really young. There are several grape varietals that go into making this fun wine. The most important part is it is a light, and easy sipper. And it's inexpensive, usually under $10.
Look for these labels:
Gazela - $7 - $9 – is made at Quinta de Azevedo estate. It’s only 9% alcohol so you can enjoy without worry! Pair it with a green chili chicken enchilada – it will compliment and help keep the fire cool!
Broadbent Vinho Verde $9 - $10 – Again, light crisp with a mouthfeel of Pinot Grigio but light bay leaves, crisp citrus and those fuzzy slight bubbles!
Wine Word of the Week: Young Wine
Young wine is a term used to describe a wine that is meant to be consumed right after it is produced. Vinho Verde is one of these. Look for vintages that are 2005 and above! Chill and sip!
