Here Come the Holidays, Parties, Dinners and New Year's!
Fitness Tips from Cindi Bell
Fitness Fan Cindi Bell shares her tips on getting through the holidays.
This is the time to enjoy yourself, but that does not mean eating everything in sight! During the holiday season, it is time for some real self control. I don't treat the holidays as a free for all. I just look at it as a time to enjoy the blessings in life such as family, friends, and good fortune. I try to stick to my same eating and exercising routine. I know there are so many holiday treats around, but in moderation, they aren't our enemy. I get through the holiday season by sticking to my goals, and having a plan.
At home, before attending parties, I eat something healthy and light so that I do not arrive starved. This helps me not pig out on any and all snacks I see. If I am having an alcoholic beverage, I don't choose high calorie thick drinks. I usually opt for a vodka tonic or a glass of wine. I am not a big drinker which helps keep pounds off. Most often, I just drink water.
I believe it is all about attitude. Most people would think that I was not enjoying the holidays if I didn't "eat, drink, and be merry." On the contrary, I am actually staying away from that heavy tired feeling, staying alert and full of energy and cherishing every minute.
During holiday meals, I choose to start my plate with meats and veggies first so that there is not a lot of room for carbohydrates. I also make healthy choices, for example, by eating sweet potatoes instead of mashed potatoes because of nutritional values. One plate of food is all I need and I don't pile it up either... no cheating!
Another issue during this festive time is when we are given baked gifts. I do happily accept. However, I make sure that I have only a taste or one piece a day and then, that's it! If it is too much for just my husband and me, then I share with whoever is around. If you can't control your portions, then just give it away so it's not in your face. Most importantly, I make sure that I exercise daily throughout December. It feels good to end the year on a good note, which in turn, rolls into a positive attitude for the following year.
When the holidays are only a thing of the past, I promise, you will be feeling great because you stuck it out and put your health and wellness first. Best of luck to all you women out there trying to make a difference in your life!
Happy Holidays!
