Eat less to hold your own
Q and A with Registered Dietician Michelle Gorman
People always say it's harder to lose weight once you get older. Is that because of menopause? Why does that happen and what can I do to hold my weight as I age?
As you age, you need less food to maintain your weight. However, your need for vitamins and minerals may stay the same or even increase. That's why it is so important to choose a variety of nutrient-rich foods everyday.
- Choose whole grains such as brown rice, 100% whole wheat bread and bran cereals
- Eat bright colored vegetables and deep-colored fruit (dark green, red, orange/ and yellow)
- Try beans, nuts, fish, lean meat, soyfood and eggs for protein sources
- Choose low and nonfat dairy products
- Watch saturated and trans fat
- Use monounsaturated fats like olive oil, canola oil and peanut oil
- Use sugar and salt sparingly
Good luck, and let us know how it goes.
