Insulin Resistance

Q & A with Registered Dietician Michelle Gorman

A member in Phoenix needs help controlling her blood sugar.

"Dear Michelle,
I have been diagnosed with severe insulin resistance. It's so bad I have had to quit my job to manage it. Can you give me some hints and suggestions on snacks in between meals that will hold my blood sugar level until the next meal? I have found that each meal/snacks must contain some carbs. Look forward to hearing from you."

Eat HealthyDear Sweet Connection Member,
The best way to control insulin resistance is to get regular exercise, reduce total carbohydrates to 50% of calories and to choose carbohydrate foods like beans, sweet potatoes, whole grains and to minimize your consumption of refined starches (sugar, white bread, candy). Also eat lots of vegetables and reasonable portions of lean meat, fish and fruit. It’s advised to eat smaller meals more frequently at regular times every day making sure each meal contains a carbohydrate (whole grain, fruit, or milk) and a protein source (egg, meat, nuts, seeds). Some good snacks would be:

  • Slice of whole wheat bread topped with peanut butter
  • 1 oz turkey wrapped around carrot stick or celery stick with whole grain crackers
  • Hummus spread with ½ whole wheat pita
  • Small bowl bran cereal with low-fat milk
  • Cheese string and whole grain crackers or popcorn
  • 1 serving fresh fruit (apple, orange, pear, peach) with a handful of almonds
  • Fruit smoothie (low-fat yogurt, milk & strawberries)
  • 1 cup sugar-free yogurt
  • 1 cup berries with low fat cottage cheese

I also recommend that you ask your physician for a referral to see a registered dietitian. An RD can help you with developing an eating plan that is right for you.

Good Luck!

~ Michelle
