Baking with Applesauce!
Advice from Registered Dietician Michelle Gorman
Instead of turning down all of your baked favorites, why not create lower fat versions? One of the easiest ways to reduce the fat in baked goods is to substitute unsweetened applesauce or other fruit purees for at least half the fat in the recipe.
Nutrient Comparison:
|
1 cup vegetable shortening |
205 grams fat, 1,812 calories |
1 cup butter |
184 grams fat, 1,628 calories |
1 cup applesauce |
0 grams fat, 104 calories |
If you replace one cup of butter with 2/3 cup applesauce and 1/3 cup butter you save 1,022 calories and 122 grams of fat!! In a cake serving eight, that results in a savings of 128 calories and 15 grams of fat per serving!
Substituting applesauce for one-half to two-thirds of the fat in your holiday baked goods will help you stick to your heart-healthy diet while enjoying the flavors of the season.
