Holiday Gifts from the Kitchen

Advice from Registered Dietician Michelle Gorman

Still trying to think of the perfect gift for someone who has everything?  Why not consider a healthful gift with a kitchen theme to promote healthy eating and an active lifestyle?

Gift basket

Try one of these health-promoting gift ideas:

  • Arrange different varieties of dried beans in a glass container; tie with a holiday bow.
  • Place three or four different types of salsa jars into a basket lined with holiday napkins.  Include a recipe for baked tortilla chips.
  • Select a variety of teas, a good source of antioxidants, and wrap in a box with colorful tea mugs.
  • Line a straw hat or terracotta pot with packets of herb seed, a pair of garden gloves, gardening tools, and a book on herbs.
  • Fill a wooden box with a variety of citrus fruits (excellent sources of vitamin C, an antioxidant).  Include tangerines, oranges and grapefruit.
  • Fill a new salad bowl with low-fat salad dressing and flavored vinegar.  Include your favorite salad recipes.
  • Purchase a favorite heart-healthy cookbook, and package the ingredients for one of the recipes in a holiday basket.
  • Make an Italian gift basket that includes pasta, marinara sauce, parmesan cheese, sun-dried tomatoes and garlic.  Add a low-fat Italian cookbook, a garlic press and a bottle of red wine for a special touch.
  • Package a homemade dry soup mix or oatmeal cookie recipe in a pretty glass jar.
  • A loaf of freshly baked loaf of whole grain bread is always a welcomed gift!
Happy Holidays!
