Don't Let Stress Throw You Off Track
Q and A with Marty Hames
Sweet Connection member Cindy from Gilbert asked Marty Hames how to get out of an exercise slump.
First off, I enjoy watching you in the morning (on 3TV). You are such an inspiration. Here's my question: I've been on Weight Watchers and am a life time member, but now I'm in a slump. I go to Curves 3 days a week and do sit-ups, leg lifts and a few various other exercises. But NOW I'm bored with everything I'm doing. Sometimes I just don't have the ambition that I once had. I have been going through a lot of stress between my dad and a friend who is in Hospice. I'm not sure if that's what has put me in the slump or not. Any suggestions as to what I can do to get out of it? I'm also disappointed in myself for gaining 6 pounds back although I am still on goal with Weight Watchers. Cindy, Gilbert
Dear Cindy,
Staying on your exercise and eating plan during times of stress can be a major challenge. That's when we're more likely to revert back to our "old ways" and seek out relief from comfort foods like cookies and chocolate. The first thing you can do is give yourself a break. Realize you are going through a tough time, and acknowledge it. Then, try to set smaller goals for yourself. Can you squeeze in 20 minutes of exercise? If you can't leave the house, try several sets of lunges, sit ups, mountain climbers, push-ups - anything to keep your heart rate up and your body challenged for 20 minutes. If you can't say no to a batch of cookies, have one, and enjoy it, rather than eating half the pan and beating yourself up for it. At the end of the day, you can feel good about the fact you worked in a little exercise, and stuck to your diet as best you could despite all the stress. And when you need a little motivation to get going, focus on how great and energized you'll feel AFTER your mini workout, or having the will power to say no to that second or third cookie. Remember, it's when times get tough that life challenges us the most! Stay tough, and you'll be stronger and healthier in the long run!
Good luck!
