Schedule a Workout Appointment with Yourself

Marty Hames

Q and A with Marty Hames

Cindy in Mesa wants to improve her health so she can enjoy her family. She asked Marty for help getting motivated to lose weight.

Hi Marty,
How do you keep yourself motivated? I'm feeling like I'm trying to do it alone!

I recently got a summer gym membership and I even find it hard to get there, and my husband's schedule is different then mine. I really need to lose weight, I would love to lose between 50-70 pounds.  I know my health isn't as good as it should be. I always know when I clothes shop how bad I want to lose because I feel very down when I'm done and most of the time don't find anything to fit. My biggest reason is I just want to be healthier.

I have 5 kids – the oldest is 23 and the youngest is 15. I also have a grandson and a granddaughter on the way.  I just could use some help on ways to get myself going and then stay that way. A little help on eating right would be good, too. Thanks Marty, you are very inspiring to watch and I really enjoy your health segments. Thanks!”

Dear Cindy,
Five kids! Wow! You are already no doubt getting a marathon workout everyday taking care of those kids. It's no wonder you have a little trouble getting motivated to get to the gym. First of all, I applaud you for even trying to make time to workout in the midst of being such a busy mom, so don't be so hard on yourself!

I know you said you feel alone in your attempts to workout, but we're all really in the same boat. Here's something that works for me when I don't have the motivation or desire to workout, and it's something you've probably heard before. I do set out my clothes to workout the night before…and set a time I plan on exercising. Then, when that time arrives, I put on my stuff and head to the gym, without even thinking about it. I stick to the pre-planned workout time as much as I can, and treat it as important as any other appointment.

And when I really don't feel like working out, or I feel too tired, I tell myself I'll just exercise for 10 minutes, and after that if I want to quit, I can. I often find that's just enough to get me into the workout, and before I know it, the hour is up!

I hope this helps! Thanks so much for your question!

Good Luck!
Marty
