"Cheat Days". Are They Okay?
Q and A with Marty Hames
Terri in Peoria is fighting a weekly urge to eat sweets.
“Hi Marty,
You look fabulous! I have a problem. About once a week I get this bad urge to want to eat sweets. I work out about 5 days a week. That includes a hike for two hours every Saturday morning. I am always hungry. I eat an average of about 1500 calories a day.“
Hi Terri,
Thanks so much for your kind compliment!
Couple of things in regards to your question. First, if you only get the "bad urge" to eat sweets once a week, consider yourself lucky! It sounds like you're working out enough, so that you can indulge in a so called "cheat day" once per week. If you have a sweet tooth, it may help you stick to a healthy diet if you know that there's one day a week you can enjoy your favorite dessert or other food.
It's not what we do once a week, but consistently over the course of the weeks, months and years, that assures us long term health success. Also, research shows dark chocolate has numerous health benefits! You also mentioned you are hungry all the time? Make sure you are eating enough protein, getting enough sleep (lack of sleep can lead to cravings), and not overdoing the carbs or sugar. Also, double check that you are getting enough of the healthy fats in your diet from foods such as salmon, almonds, and avocados. These can help keep hunger at bay.
Good Luck!
