Start Out Easy to Build Motivation
Q and A with Marty Hames
Nancy in Yuma is struggling to find motivation to start exercising.
“Hi Marty,
I have fibromyalgia and depression. At times I don't feel like doing anything. I need to know how to get started on losing weight and exercising. I have lost interest in everything. I'm overweight also. How can I start to get motivated?”
Hi Nancy,
My heart goes out to you. It's tough enough to stay motivated to exercise regularly, but depression and fibromyalgia can really zap your zest for working out. First of all, I am assuming you are under the care of a physician who is helping you with treatments for these two disorders. Outside of that, exercise, or really any kind of physical activity at all, can go a long way toward helping you feel better.
I would recommend starting with something very easy… such as taking a walk around the block every morning. Then the next day, make it two walks around the block, or an extra 10 minutes. Increase it every day until you are working up to 45 minutes. As much as you don't feel like heading out the door, tell yourself you are only going to give it a try for 10 minutes! And then if you feel like you want to, or that you can keep on going, then by all means, do it! When you're done, hopefully you will feel invigorated by your activity. Then spend some quiet time if you can, focusing on that feeling, and enjoying your efforts. It is that feeling that will hopefully help inspire you to keep going!
Good Luck!
