Talk to Your Trainer
Q & A with Therapist Lauren Bounds
A member in Gilbert is trying to get back in shape after an illness.
I'm a very large woman, just this side of 50. I have severe arthritis in feet and disc herniation in lower back. I'm coming off an illness, still have trouble breathing (asthmatic).
A personal trainer I've worked with thinks I can just hop right on the band wagon and start doing cardio and my weight training again. I relapsed the last time this happened. What might you suggest I say to her to make her understand that I need to enter into this gently and not overtax my body?
During my illness I lost 12 pounds, but that was through no appetite and therefore, not enough protein and I'm weak. It's hard for people who've never been as ill as I to understand I just can't get right back on the horse...I need some suggestions for this trainer and for myself to get back to my old routine, albeit at a MUCH slower route. Thank you.
Lauren's Advice:
I'm sorry to hear you are having trouble communicating with your personal trainer, but you seemed to be able to express your concerns to me without trouble. I would recommend opening the lines of communication with your trainer. If you really like this personal trainer you need to sit down with him/her and discuss your medical history, your physical limitations and set some goals. Set realistic goals, both long term and short term. It you are still having trouble after talking with your trainer I would recommend finding a new personal trainer. Interview them first and discuss your medical history. If he/she can not empathize with you then try another one.
After all, you are paying your trainer to assist you in an individual fitness plan and if you can't work together towards the same goals then what's the point?!
Good luck, keep moving!
