Get Fit While You Sit!
Q & A with Trainer Chris Powell
The Sweet Connection Editors asked Chris how to tone while we're sitting at our desks all day!
Oh I love this question! First of all, toning is a direct result of proper nutrition, but for a good workout and to stimulate the muscles, this is a great little trick of the trade. Okay, I'm going to give you something to do for just one minute. After that minute, you'll have a whole new appreciation for the muscle stimulation you are capable of creating when sitting all day.
- First, squeeze your glutes (butt) as hard as you can.
- Holding the squeeze, try to sit up as tall as you possibly can like you are trying to push your head thru the ceiling!
- Still holding the squeeze in the glutes, try to pull your shoulders back (only about 1 inch)
- Hold this posture for 1 minute and then relax. Repeat every time you have the urge to hit the snack machine, and you're gonna get a good workout!
This does something called 'activating the core muscles'. Basically it contracts the glute muscles (the biggest muscles in the body, which burn the most calories), the transverse abdominus (the 'core' muscle and center of all movement), erectors (muscles that help straighten the spine), and rhomboids (muscles that pull your shoulders into 'perfect posture'). On top of all of the muscles this exercise stimulates, it is also a great 'corrective exercise' many therapists use to pull the body into perfect posture.
