Slingshot Past that Plateau

Q & A with Trainer Chris Powell

Fernanda of Phoenix is stuck on a diet plateau.

Dear Chris,

I have been trying to lose the extra 25 pound for about four months now, but I just don't know how any more. I've done exercise and tried to change diets, but nothing really has been happening to my body. I just don't see any changes.

I was wondering if you can help me in any way. I would appreciate it really much.

Dear Fernanda,

Ahhh yes – you’ve hit the infamous dieter’s plateau! It can be frustrating, I know. Well, hang in there because there is an answer. Here’s the secret – no matter how much exercise and ‘dieting’ you do, your body will adapt and weight loss will stop.

So how do we get around it? Do something different!

Whenever my clients stop losing weight, the first thing I do is bump up their cardio exercise from 20 minutes to 40 minutes every other day. In addition, I have them ‘crossover’ from hi carbohydrate meals to low carbohydrate meals earlier in the day. This means that for their first three meals they eat foods high in carbs and low in fats. For their last three meals, they ‘crossover’ from hi carb meals to low carb meals that are higher in fats…while still keeping calories lower, this triggers the body to burn more fat for fuel!

Even with a perfect structure to nutrition and exercise, their bodies will still plateau. When this happens, I have them do something a little different. They stop the diet and exercise altogether for a week! The most they can do is walk 30 minutes a day, and they are required to eat large, solid meals 5 times a day. This allows the body the rest and recovery it needs to boost the metabolism back up so that once the week is over you can go right back to the diet and exercise and get amazing results again. I call this process ‘slingshotting’ – it resets and skyrockets the metabolism back up for significant weight loss! Try this out and let me know how it goes!

Good luck!
~Chris
