Don't Crash Your Metabolism

Q & A with Trainer Chris Powell

A member in Phoenix is trying to get ready for her wedding.

Dear Chris,

I've been working out with a trainer since August and have now hit a plateau in my weight. I'm getting married soon and need to step things up.

I'm not sure exactly how many calories I should be eating if I'm working out two really hard days with the trainer and then doing cardio on my own 3-4 days for 45 minutes. Any advice would be much appreciated. Thanks.

Hey there!

I’m gonna tell you a story. I’m not sure if you have seen ‘David’s Story’. He is a man that I have been working with for 4 years now – we started in 2003 when he was 630 pounds, and he lost 401 pounds in just over 2 years! You can read his story on my website at www.staxsystem.com.

One of the most important things to remember, is that your weight loss is not linear – this means that it will NOT be consistent. You should lose weight, then plateau. Then lose more weight, then plateau. Each time your body hits a plateau it is telling you something…your body has adapted and needs a significant change in your nutrition and exercise to lose weight again.

With David, we plateaued his weight at least 6 or 7 times before we reached his goal weight of 229 pounds. In fact, at one time I had him running bleachers and eating under 2000 calories a day…when he was 450 pounds! His body required much more energy than just 2000 calories a day.

To get him past his plateaus, he would take 2 weeks off and just walk lightly – and consume about 4000 calories daily! Every time we would do this, he would drop another 10-20 pounds…just walking and eating!

When training on a regular basis, most people immediately think that they need to eat less and exercise more, but in reality, it is just the opposite!! If you exercise MORE and eat LESS, you will crash your metabolism. Instead, I recommend you take 1-2 weeks off, walk for 20-30 minutes a day VERY LIGHTLY and increase your calories to around 2000-2400 daily. You must let your body rest, relax, and recover – then after 2 weeks take it right back in to training and your old nutrition structure and you’ll blast right through your plateau!!

~Chris
