Early Birds Get the Best Workout

Q & A with Expert Trainer Chris Powell

Mindy in Mesa is a night owl who prefers to workout at night.

"Hi Chris,

I find myself having more energy during the evening hours then I do in the morning time. Will it affect my weight loss if I switch my workout to the evenings rather than trying to make it through them in the mornings?"

Hi there Mary,

So you’re a night owl, huh?? This is a very common problem for many of us. It’s so funny to go to the local gym at 5, 6, 7, 8pm and see it packed to the brim with people getting off of work and into the gym for their daily sweat. First of all, good for them for actually getting into the gym. But when it comes down to results (and that is why we go to the gym, right??), you’ll find most of the fittest and healthiest folks prefer to train in the mornings!

As a night owl myself, I’ll even admit that when the alarm goes off in the morning, the last thing I want to do is to jump out of bed and onto a treadmill. But…as tough as it is, working out in the morning is so much better for you, and you get much better results! It may be difficult at first, but it is proven that if you do this for just a few successive weeks, you will find yourself waking up with more energy and it will be so much easier to get that morning workout in. I try to encourage all of my clients to train in the mornings. Exercising first thing in the morning boosts the metabolism for a major calorie after-burn throughout the day. For those who train with weights, it also allows us to consume 5 to 6 meals throughout the day to help replenish and build muscles.

I’m even going to go out on a limb here…although I am not a huge fan of caffeine, it can be a useful tool as some times. If you find yourself dreading that morning workout, for some I might suggest a cup of green tea or coffee first thing to get you moving. Of course, I will always try to steer you away from those stimulants for a handful of reasons. But it may be better than continuing on the downward spiral of evening workouts and late nights!

If it makes you feel better, you’re not in this alone. When your alarm goes off, I’m probably already halfway thru my morning workout.

Hang in there...the results are worth it!

~ Chris
