Get Walking for Weight Loss

Q & A with Expert Trainer Chris Powell

Member Dawn in Casa Grande is getting a jump on the New Year with a walking program.

Hi Chris,

I have just started the Weight Watchers diet and have lost 6 pounds and am starting to walk every day to help with the weight loss process. I am wondering what is the best walking program to go on in order to help with the whole diet and exercise program. I have been walking at 3mph on the treadmill for 30 minutes in the morning and then I try to get back on the treadmill in the evening after work also for another 30 minutes to 45 minutes. I want to get the most out of this walking as I possibly can and would love to have any suggestions to help me speed up my weight loss. I would appreciate any help that you could offer to me. Thank you for listening and I look forward to your answer.

Hi Dawn,

Fantastic - Congratulations on your success! I’m sure you are feeling like a million bucks now. Actually, it sounds like you are right on track with your walking program. 3mph for 30 minutes is a great pace – and twice a day! Just make sure that you let the folks at Weight Watchers know how much you are exercising…the more you exercise, the more you need to eat to lose weight. I know it sounds counter-intuitive, but that’s how humans work. If we are constantly burning the fuel (food) in our metabolic engine (muscles contracting when walking), we need to refuel the body more often so that we don’t run out of fuel and cool off the engine. Get it?

Keep in mind that your body will begin to adapt to everything that we do. You may have noticed this already – after the first week, it got a bit easier to do 30 minutes, right? You adapted! If you want to step it up a notch on the workouts, I suggest you try a bit more of an interval style every other week just to throw your body off and keep it guessing. Start out at 2mph for a 5 minute warm-up, then increase to 4mph for 1 minute, then 2 mph for a minute, back to 4 mph, and so on…the 30 minute workout will seem much more intense – and it is!

Keep up the good work Dawn!

~ Chris
