Work It Out!
with Tai Chi and Qigong
So you're thinking about exercising, but the idea of jumping on a treadmill just doesn't thrill you? There are lots of ways to get a great workout that you may not find at your neighborhood gym... and this is the place to learn more about them. We're searching the valley for unusual ways to exercise so we can share them with you. To get things started, we hooked up with Don Fiore. Don is a certified Tai Chi-Qigong Instructor and Trainer. He's certified in Tai Chi Chih, Tai Chi for Arthritis, Chen Style, 42 Combined Form, and is a graduate of the Western School of Feng Shui.
We asked Don to tell us about himself.
After 25 years working in a corporate and real estate setting, I realized first hand how stress can deplete energy, health, and productivity. Seeing the benefits of TaiChi and Qigong in my own life, I began sharing these health builders with professional golfers, employees, colleges, hospitals and fitness centers. I've been teaching and training others since 1993. I'm also a Feng Shui consultant for Hospitals, businesses and individuals who are interested in enhancements for their home and business.
Tell us about TaiChi and Qigong:
TAI CHI is a gentle, slow movement which shifts the weight forward and backward, while strengthening muscles, increasing balance, lowering blood pressure, and reducing stress.
QIGONG is stretching and breathing for healing and strengthening the body, mind, and spirit.
What kind of workout do women get from this?
TAI CHI and QIGONG provide moderate cardiovascular workouts that increase lung capacity and improve the metabolism. They also tone muscles, increase flexibility, boost the immune system, reduce stress, increase energy, and improve balance and coordination.
How can someone get started?
No special equipment is needed. People can do Tai Chi and Qigong while standing or sitting and still receive benefits. I teach people from 9 to 90 years old... even some with Parkinsons.
What is the most fun thing about this type of exercise?
It feels good... and brings peace, serenity and energy to one's being. Many comment that it empowers their body, mind, and spirit.
