Chrysalis - The Plan
The Phoenix Shelter is one of two emergency shelters run by Chrysalis. It's the most critical of their capital needs. The plan is to expand the Phoenix Shelter in 2 phases. Phase 1 includes demolishing the existing structure on the property adjacent to the shelter and building a new shelter with expanded bed space. This land was purchased last year through a line of credit. Phase 2 involves tearing down the existing shelter and rebuilding on that property. The new building will house shelter support services including counseling, case management, and shelter administration. It will also house the new child development center.
There is a critical shortage of domestic violence beds in the community. The Arizona Department of Economic Security estimates that approximately 80% of women seeking shelter are turned away due to lack of bed space. A current MAG report indicates a minimum of 325 beds should be added to the Maricopa County system to help meet this need.
Estimated Budget: $3,000,000
The estimated budget includes $240,227 to pay off a line of credit. Estimated demolition, construction and equipment costs for both Phase 1 and Phase 2 are 2,100,000. The remainder of the $3,000,000 estimated budget is for three years of expected increases in operating costs due to the increased bed space and a provision for an endowment fund to help cover future program expenses.
Target Date of Completion:
Within 2 years of receiving City of Phoenix funding. (Estimated to be April, 2006)
