Think (and Do) Green

Advice from Animal Expert Dr. Grey Stafford

With spring and St. Patrick’s Day upon us, it’s time to think green.   Not just green in the colors we wear, but in the environmentally friendly attitudes and actions we take.  So who better to discuss animals and being green than our friends at the Arizona Humane Society?

Hybrids
According to the AZHS, they’ve just purchased new hybrid vehicles.  Since their rescuers travel about 300,000 miles a year in and around Maricopa County to help animals in need, these new vehicles will reduce pollution emissions and save money on fuel.  Those savings can help provide temporary care for additional animals.

Recycling and Tinting

In addition the AZHS recycles paper in their offices, which reduces the need to buy paper for notes/scratch pads.  They plant only indigenous, low water use trees on Society property.  They recently completed “tinting” the 132 windows in the Learning Center at the AZHS Campus.  As a result, the rooms will be kept cooler, thus reducing energy usage and A/C costs.  In the future, they are exploring ways to rebuild and fund the Sunnyslope Facility using a number of "green" options including solar and/or wind power; water recharge;  xeriscape; and earth friendly building materials.

Adopting
And finally, since this is a pet training column, I can think of nothing more green than giving a second chance to a deserving pet in need of a home.  It just so happens the AZ Humane Society has hundreds of loving pets in need of good homes and compassionate training based upon positive reinforcement.  Please consider “recycling” a living creature into your own home that someone else has discarded all too soon.
