Get a Chocolate Bunny Instead
Advice from Animal Expert Dr. Grey Stafford
This time of year it is tempting to buy one of those little bunnies in the pet store. Who can resist those cute, furry creatures that are often so young they fit in the palm of your hand? Well, for their sake, do your best to resist the temptation. Too many bunnies end up being abandoned or turned in to shelters once the novelty is gone.
To be fair, no pet should ever be brought into a home on a whim or as an impulse purchase. Pets simply require too much work, expense and attention to acquire one without thinking about how you'll care for it for the rest of its life. Even rabbits need to be socialized and have access to play and exercise. They will not stay cute and friendly without regular contact with humans. Plus, despite their small size, they can still be a lot of work. For example, everyone throughout the house knows when the bedding hasn’t been changed lately. And, some varieties shed a great deal. So, by the time you factor in the time it takes for regular grooming for some, socializing, cleaning and feeding, why not visit the Humane Society and adopt a dog or cat in need of a second chance? (Assuming you've thought long and hard about whether your family is ready to provide for any pet right now.)
If you feel yourself weakening, wanting to give into temptation, find another outlet. There are plenty of deserving chocolate bunnies, marshmallow peeps, and candy eggs that need a good home.
Happy Easter!
