Invisible Zipper for a Designer Pillow

High-end designer pillows are sewn with invisible zippers. The invisible zipper is hidden in the seam which creates a beautiful finished pillow. Register for a hands-on pillow class at Sonoran Sewing and learn the techniques of sewing invisible zippers.

Cut front & back of pillow the same size

Add welt cord or decorative cording on front side of pillow

Zipper length-minimum 2” shorter than pillow, preferably as long or longer than pillow bottom

Open Zipper the full length

Place zipper teeth next to decorative welt cord (zipper tape should line up with selvage edge of pillow). Stitch zipper to
fabric with a basting stitch

Roll teeth flat (open) and stitch in the ditch as close as possible to zipper teeth without stitching the teeth. Start and stop stitching about 2” from each end of the pillow.

Zip the zipper closed, this will help match the side edges of the pillow

With right sides together pin zipper in place at the bottom of the pillow back matching outside edges of the pillow. (Open zipper at this time).

Baste the zipper in place with the tape of zipper on the bottom edge of the fabric.

Return to the beginning of the zipper and fold the teeth open and stitch in the ditch as close as possible with out catching the teeth in your stitching.

Now you are ready to close the pillow at the zipper ends
Lay pillow with cord stitching up. Start at the end of the zipper and stitch the seam to the outside edge on both ends of the zipper. Be sure to back stitch these seams at the zipper point.

Begin stitching the pillow.

Turn your pillow right side out, insert pillow fill and zip pillow!
