Lantana Should Come Back
Barn Goddess® Leslie Honaker, "The Gardener"
Dear Leslie,
I have purple lantana plants in my yard. They tend to lay flat on the ground and grow long arms like vines, but others in the neighborhood look more like shrubs. Is that a different variety, or are they just trimming it differently? Also, I forgot to cover my plants so now the lantana have dead looking patches in the middle with green at the ends and near the body of the plant. How much should I trim and when should I do it?
The lantana you have and the ones you see in your neighbors' yard could be a different variety. There are those that grow more upright versus the trailer you have. And, yes it could be the type of pruning they are doing. Frost will certainly damage lantanas. The good news, most recover. Just prune damaged wood after last frost. You can prune up to 1/3 of the plant, some cut as much as 2/3. Fertilizer may not be necessary, for those growing in the ground but if you would like to boost your plant, easy does it. Too much will reduce flowering and make it susceptible to disease. I recommend feeding lightly with an all purpose organic fertilizer after last date of frost…which is usually after March 15.
Good Luck!
~ Leslie
