Forced into Marriage

By Relationship Barista Lissa Coffey

A member in Phoenix married for the wrong reasons.

Dear Lissa,

marriage

Hi-I have a huge problem! I am 22 (almost 23) and got married a year and a half ago. The thing is, I felt like I was forced into getting married because it was what everyone in his family thought was the right things to do.

However, I am an extreme A type personality and he an extreme B! He is introverted, I am driven; he is slow-paced and I am fast-paced.

It's not that he is a bad guy, in fact we did try separating for 6 weeks and we were better friends than anything. But, he makes me feel so horrible for wanting to divorce.

As of right now I have decided to start the divorce in September. I know if I go through with it, then we will have to live separately and he can't stand the thought of it.

My question is, since I got married, should I just keep trying to make it work? I am not happy the majority of the time, but he assures me that I wont be happy anyway because I am an "uptight personality!"

Lissa advises …don't take advice.

The mistake you made was in listening to other people when you decided to get married, rather than listening to your own heart, and abiding by your own judgment. If you stay married now, you'll be making the same mistake again. You need to do what you think is best for you. It's your life, and your decision. Only you know what it is you need to do.

Love,
~ Lissa
