Sweet Advice to Keep our Message Boards Sweet

from Relationship Barista Lissa Coffey

online communicationCyberspace is a wonderful place. We can meet people from all over the world. We can communicate with people and share our feelings instantly. But cyberspace, like life, doesn't come with operating instructions. The problem we have with posting on a board is that it is not like talking with people face to face. There's no body language to read, no facial expressions, no tone of voice that comes through. So many times what is written is open to interpretation. If the message is interpreted incorrectly, we may jump to conclusions, or take things personally. This isn't conducive to a "sweet" environment.

Let me propose Don Miguel Ruiz's "Four Agreements." The world would be such a beautiful place if we all followed them. And cyberspace would be much kinder and gentler if we all would take these to heart both when reading, and writing, postings and e-mails.

1. Be impeccable to your word. To me that means do what you say you're going to do. Be truthful, present yourself honestly.

2. Don't take anything personally. When people say or do things, it's always about them, and never about us, as much as we may feel it is directed at us.

3. Don't make assumptions. Did you see that "Odd Couple" episode where Oscar explains to Felix that when you ASSUME, you make an A** of U and ME? And finally

4. Always do your best. If we all just do our best, and know that everyone else is doing their best, then we can be forgiving and patient... and we can all get along just fine!
