Dear "Wanting the Friends",
Generally the friends decide, and it just kind of happens organically. It really doesn't have to be the case that the friends pick one "side" or the other, but that's what usually ends up happening. Be nice to all the friends, don't burn any bridges. And know that whichever ones end up maintaining their relationship with you will be even better friends because they've helped to see you through this awkward time.
