Are you having a hard time reaching those goals you've set up for yourself? Well, we've asked Relationship Barista, Lissa Coffey to share advice on goal setting and personal change.

Decide what is important to you. Ask yourself these questions:

  • If I had a full week all to myself with no obligations, what would I do?
  • If money were not a factor, how would I spend my time?
  • What five words best describe the person I really am?
This first step is about insight. It's not judgment, or evaluation, it's a personal inventory. "What do I want?" is a big question, and it will guide every step on the path to change.

Realistic time Allotment
  • What is your day like now?
  • What time can you devote just to this goal?
  • When do you want to see change?
The universe doesn't know time – it's up to you to set a schedule. It could happen today, it could happen "eventually" – but by making a plan and sticking to it, you assure that you are making progress to get to that goal in the time you allow for it.

Pairing with a "goal partner"
  • Who shares this dream for you?
  • Who can give you unconditional support?
  • Who do you trust?
A goal partner can help keep you on track. She can be your cheerleader. You can encourage each other, and have a sense of pride and accomplishment for each other which will help to spur you on!

Determining action steps
  • Break down the big goal into smaller goals.
  • Celebrate each smaller goal, and move towards the next.
  • Map out where you need to be, and what it takes to get you there.
  • Write down the steps you've taken so you can mark your progress.
Overcoming obstacles
  • Make a list of possible obstacles before you begin, and plot out various options you have to meet them.
  • Be prepared for whatever comes up! Have a "script" at the ready so you're not taken by surprise.
  • Plan for obstacles, but always expect the best. Steer your ship toward smooth waters.
