An Annoyed Neighbor
Coffey Talk, with Relationship Expert Lissa Coffey
"Any ideas on dealing with a nosy neighbor? I moved into this wonderful home in a great neighborhood and I’m happy with that, but my one neighbor is going to drive me up the wall.
She constantly talks and talks and talks to us about nothing. She will look over my fence into my backyard. Ya, I understand that we have a common fence, but that doesn't give her the right to look over. I ignore her and leave her alone.
Tonight my husband and I were spending time in our pool and yes, earlier we had the sprinklers on to water the grass. So, she came out not knowing we were out there and popped over the fence with her flashlight looking in our backyard. My husband said "what do you want?" All she could say is that there was a bit of water coming through the fence. Well damn, I can't help that the sprinklers run to water my grass and that some water bleeds through the brick fence.
Any idea how to get her out?"
Dear Annoyed Neighbor
A taller fence? A hedge? This woman sounds lonely. She's clearly not getting the hint that you need some "space" so, I think it's time you leveled with her. Next time she starts going on and on – cut it short, and explain that you're really busy and have things to attend to. Next time she pops her head over the fence, explain that you really value your privacy. Being neighborly doesn't necessarily mean being best buddies. You can set your limits. Good fences make good neighbors, as the saying goes.
Love,
~ Lissa
