How Quick Is Too Quick?

Advice from Relationship Expert Lissa Coffey

How Quick Is Too Quick"Dear Lissa,

How quick is too quick? If you're sure he's the right one, how long should you wait to make sure you really know him before you get engaged?"

Dear Sure He’s the One,

Time is relative.  There's no one right way to do anything.  Getting to know a person takes more than time, it takes truthfulness.  Are you honest with each other about everything?  If you're considering marrying this person you should be able to share who you really are - not just physically, but the nitty-gritty of finances, crazy relatives, high school yearbook photos and annoying habits.  Then, when you're both in agreement that you love each other as is, warts and all, and you're not looking to change anything about each other, then go ahead and get engaged.

Getting engaged is one thing. Getting married is another. The engagement period is kind of your trial run.  This is when you figure out how you solve problems together, how you make allowances for each other, and how you deal with each other when you're tired and cranky and stressed out.  Once you know exactly what you're getting yourselves into and you're perfectly comfortable that you can live with that for the rest of your lives, then go ahead and get married.

You have my blessing!

~ Lissa
