Skating On Thin Ice

Blades of Glory skates by with 3 Red Vines for keeping the laughs coming |
The year is 2002 and for two male ice skaters, winning gold metals should put them on top of the world. But instead of basking in glory, they erupt into fisticuffs that get them banned from men’s singles competition-permanently. That is until they stumble upon the loopiest of loopholes: skating as the first pair’s team of men.
Yeah, the premise for Blades of Glory might be thin but thanks to Will Ferrell’s mantra of ‘committing to the moment’, the comedy easily glided to box office heaven.
It’s no secret I love Will Ferrell’s movies and this one is no exception. As the alpha male of men’s ice skating (can such a creature even exist?!), Ferrell milks the part for all it’s worth. Jon Heder (Napoleon Dynamite) plays his younger, yet equally talented rival for whom no love is lost. Jon does the best job in his most fully realized character since Napoleon Dynamite. And I’ll bet he’s breathing a sigh of relief because it was beginning to look like he would never be in another good movie.
Once the duo puts aside their differences, they team up and prove to be formidable competition to beat. As ‘Fire and Ice’, they go for the obvious and not so obvious laughs you would imagine from watching two male partners skate.
Amy Poehler from Saturday Night Live and her real life hubby, Will Arnett (the Bluth family magician from Arrested Development) star as their arch-enemies on the ice. They are a scream! Rounding out the cast are notable appearances by Andy Richter, Rob Corddry, Craig T. Nelson—as what else? —a coach! —and real life skating icon, Scott Hamilton as a sports anchor.
So to the list of anchorman, soccer coach, fashionisto, NASCAR racer, you can now add Olympic ice skater. But which is role is his funniest? For me, it’s still Anchorman Ron Burgundy but I wouldn’t give Blades of Glory a cold shoulder.
