My Date with a Super Devil!

by Flick Chick Vique Rojas

Our movie reviewer, Flick Chick Vique Rojas gives us her take on The Devil Wears Prada

4 and a half red vines I give The Devil Wears Prada 4½ Red Vines.

Wow! The summer movies are out in full force and I’m doing my best to keep up with them for you!

First, I had a deviliscious good time watching The Devil Wears Prada. Now I might not know much about purses that cost thousands of dollars but who amongst us hasn’t had a brush with a boss from heck? I once had a boss snap her fingers and point to the floor to beckon me to her side. It was horrible being called like a dog and having it happen in a nice restaurant was the ultimate humiliation. But I really liked and wanted to keep my job. Thus, I endured whatever blows were dealt my way.

So, the story about a fresh-faced college grad, Andy, (Anne Hathaway from Princess Diaries, Brokeback Mountain), who becomes an assistant to one of the most powerful – and feared – fashion magazine editors, Miranda Priestly, (Meryl Streep) was something that made me both laugh and cringe.

A lot of credit for the comedy lies squarely on the performance of Ms. Streep. I think just about everyone agrees that, hands down, she is our finest living actress, and someone will be hard-pressed to snatch yet another Best Actress Oscar from her, come Academy Awards time. Her character is cold, abrupt, ridiculously demanding and yet you grow to care about her and in the end understand why her staff puts up with her outrageous behavior. They respect her and in the end you do, too. Our grandparents and parents had the pleasure of seeing the newest Bette Davis or Katherine Hepburn offering but we get Meryl Streep! I can’t say which generation’s luckier!

Holding her own against this formidable force of nature is Anne Hathaway. She exudes such vulnerability and desire to achieve that you can’t help but root for her. And you’ll be just as blown away as her co-workers when she emerges from her wallflower cocoon to become a fashion savvy butterly.

Speaking of her co-workers, Stanley Tucci as Nigel, has supporting actor nomination written all over his performance as the zine’s art director. He is fun, catty, supportive and the kind of guy who will slap you when you’re in hysterics.

And U.K. actress Emily Blunt as Emily, Miranda’s head assistant is truly wonderful in her equally catty, eager to climb to the top of the scratching post role.

I can’t compare it to the book as I haven’t read it but I talked to one gal who said she liked the book better but enjoyed the movie very much.

I might not know from price tags but I know what looks fabulous and the fashions are to die for! Beautiful to look at, laugh out loud funny, I thoroughly recommend this movie as a thoughtful, adult comedy. And ladies, the guys in the audience seemed to be laughing just as hard.

LADIES ROOM LOWDOWN

A husband who accompanied his wife to The Devil Wears Prada told me he is studying the dynamics of women in the workplace, as he works in an office of all women. He said, "Boy, men are mean but you women can be vicious!"
