The Freaks Come Out at Night

by Flick Chick Vique

3 Red Vines
Night at the Museum gets 3 Red Vines for being a great family field trip

It’s one of those movies with something for everyone: beloved movie icons, comedic superstars, action, adventure, big laughs and oh yeah-a mummy, warriors, a dinosaur and a spunky monkey!

That’s just a taste of what to expect in Ben Stiller’s new comedy-adventure, Night at the Museum.  In it, Stiller plays the new night watchman at the Museum of Natural History.  But what happens at night is anything but natural!

To the delight of many fans, veteran actors Dick Van Dyke and Mickey Rooney along with Bill Cobbs play the retiring watchmen with a secret: at night, history literally comes alive in the museum!  They reluctantly recruit Stiller to take their place, while conveniently failing to tell him what’s in store after dark.

The result is the silliest history lesson you’ll ever get as everything from artifacts to animals come alive to bedevil the overwhelmed Stiller.  He does a great job especially when you realize most of his acting was done to a green wall!  Just about everybody and everything he interacts with was added in post, yet Stiller does his usual stellar job of ringing every last laugh from each scene.

Fortunately he’s surrounded by a supporting cast of comedic greats like Owen Wilson and Robin Williams doing a surprisingly sympathetic turn as Teddy Roosevelt.

But boy was it fun to watch Dick Van Dyke and Mickey Rooney!  And in case anyone had forgotten just how easy it is for Mickey to steal a scene, he reminds you every time he takes center stage!

If only history had been this much fun in school!

Phoenix Movie Reviews

LADIES ROOM LOWDOWN:
Here's some fun movie trivia for you! Night at the Museum was written by Officers Jim Dangle and Travis Junior of Reno 911! Yep, Ben Garant (Travis) and Thomas Lennon (Dangle) co-wrote the screenplay. And it's not the first time they've collaborated as writing partners. In addition to Reno 911 the series, they have penned several features including Herbie Fully Loaded and Let's Go to Prison.

But the real scoop is that their latest movie offering is Reno 911, Miami! It opens February 23rd. Can't wait!
