I Had a Feeling This Movie Would Be Good!

Premonition earns 3 Red Vines for unconventional storytelling |
I’ve made more than a few predictions in my lifetime that came to fruition but I am far from having ‘a gift’. No, my talent is having a really good gut instinct. Wish I’d follow it more often! But I did have a feeling that I would like Premonition and I did.
In the latest Sandra Bullock ‘vehicle’ she plays an ordinary wife and mother, in an ordinary dysfunctional marriage. Ordinary until her husband is killed in an accident. She numbly goes through the motions planning his funeral, only to wake up the next day and find he’s perfectly alive and well and eating a bowl of cereal.
Like past mystery movies that play out of sequence (Memento, Ground Hog Day), the audience is left to put together the clues along with Sandra. It isn’t long before all are left to wonder which is the reality and which is the dream as she goes back and forth every time she awakes from sleep.
I took up the challenge and came up with a couple of different endings for the movie that didn’t exactly pan out. And although my companion and I were surprised the movie ended the way it did, we were not disappointed. But you should know that the number one criticism from audiences is the ending. They hate it.
I like Sandra Bullock but I wouldn’t call myself a fan. For while I like her, I’m not a fan of her usual fare. This is a dramatic turn for her and she handles it nicely. No melodrama, just realism. Playing her husband is Julian McMahon of Nip/Tuck fame. His role is very small and I had a hard time getting used to him fully clothed! Then they did a brief shower scene with him and I told my friend, “Now that’s more like it! Now he looks like Julian!”
This isn’t an easy movie to follow but if you’re a fan of mysteries and don’t mind doing a little ‘work’ during your movie then you will find Premonition an enjoyable workout!
