A Very Romantic Holiday

Breaking up stinks but a break up just before the holidays brings an extra level of stinkyness!
In The Holiday, Cameron Diaz plays Amanda; a workaholic movie trailer producer who finds out her boyfriend of many years has been cheating on her for months. Across the ocean, Kate Winslet as Iris, experiences the same kind of heartbreak with a different twist. Her on again, off again secret office love announces his engagement to another co-worker at the company Christmas party. Talk about stinky!
Amanda decides that a trip is needed to relax and rejuvenate. She Googles home swapping vacations and lo and behold she finds Kate's English countryside cottage. The picturesque home is perfect for her escape. And Iris is more than willing and available to escape to Amanda's luxurious L.A. mini-mansion.
Their Greta Garbo acts (“I vant to be alone”) come to a screeching halt when romance comes knocking, literally! Miles (Jack Black) shows up at Amanda's to pick up some of her ex's (Edward Burns) belongings and runs into Iris. Meanwhile, Graham (Jude Law) shows up at Iris' in a drunken stupor in the middle of the night. He tells Amanda that he's Iris' wayward brother who sometimes crashes on the couch when he's had too much at the local pub.
Needless to say, falling in love with someone who lives on a different continent was not something any of these four were looking for but during the course of events that's exactly what happens. For you see, each of the guys was painfully available and more than a little heartbroken themselves. How convenient!
I don't think the trailers for this movie do it justice. Which is funny because one of the movie's ‘gimmicks' are the constant movie trailers Amanda imagines for the twists and turns in her life.
Cameron Diaz is her usual charming self and displays her seemingly endless array of facial expressions. She's at her best when it's just her and the camera! Jude Law plays the most handsome, wonderful guy you could imagine. And while you might think Diaz gets the hunk, while Winslet gets the chunk, Jack Black gives all the beautiful people a run for their money in the charm department. It's easy to see why Winslet finds herself unexpectedly smitten!
Diaz, Law, Winslet, Black are all big stars with big talent to be sure but watch out, a superstar steals the show without even trying! Eli Wallach as Arthur Abbott, an old Hollywood screenwriter is a riot and absolutely the cutest thing in a movie that's filled with cute! At 92 he's still going strong and is a marvel and a joy to watch. His scenes with Winslet raise the bar for charm. I gotta admit I teared up a lot during his scenes. They are moving!
With heart, charm, romance, a little heartbreak and a lot of humor, The Holiday is the perfect chick flick to add to your Christmas classics list!
